Knowing your hair’s porosity is key to perfect color uptake and retention. In the form, you’ll select your porosity type—low, medium, or high—so we can adjust our advice for you. We know it’s an extra step, but it makes all the difference. Just drop a few clean strands in a glass of water and see if they float or sink (details below).

How to Test Your Hair Porosity

  1. Fill a clear glass with room-temperature water.
  2. Drop in a few strands of clean, product-free hair.
  3. Wait three minutes:
  • Sinks = High porosity
  • Floats = Low porosity
  • Half-sinks = Medium porosity
