A bottled brown is one engineered pigment, so it returns the same flat tone in every light. Dark Brown is a stack of plant pigments sitting at different depths — and each one answers the sun differently.

This is what dimension actually is. Synthetic dye strips your natural pigment out and replaces it with one uniform colour, so there is nothing left underneath for light to find. Plant pigments layer over what is already there — which is why the sun keeps finding something.

Brown is the hardest place to land. Henna alone goes orange. Indigo alone goes blue-black. Dark Brown sits between them, and a small shift in either direction shows immediately — too much indigo reads cold, too little reads coppery.
Two of these seven aren't in the darker shades at all. Hibiscus contributes a violet register that keeps the brown from going brassy, and methi turns the powder into a paste that spreads evenly. Change the ratio again and you get one of the other 23 shades.

What to Expect
Dark Brown Finishes
Over Three Days.
Chemical dye is done when you rinse. Plant color keeps developing after you leave the bathroom. Here is the sequence, so nothing about it surprises you.
Right after rinsing
Brighter than you expect
Copper and orange sit on the surface while the indigo has yet to oxidize. Every henna-based brown starts here. Do not judge it now.
First 12 to 24 hours
The warmth drops back
Air does the work. Indigo forms and pulls the copper down, while henna's own pigment deepens. Most of the change happens on day one.
Days two and three
Settles into Dark Brown
The slower red-violet molecule finishes forming and the tone stops moving. This is the colour that stays — judge it here.
Two molecules, two speeds
Indigo leaves don't contain one dye. As the powder meets water, indoxyl is released and follows two separate oxidation routes: one produces the blue indigo molecule quickly, the other produces red-violet indirubin slowly.
A 2025 study measured both on hair fibres and confirmed that the delayed appearance of indirubin is what causes the colour shift in the days after application. The orange you see on day one isn't the result. It's the first reaction, before the second one catches up.

Three things that help it finish
If the copper is still there on day four, the development stopped early — usually moisture, water pH, or product residue on the hair. All three are fixable, and none of them are permanent.
