It cleans. It does not lather.

Reetha washes hair through saponins — compounds the plant makes that lower the surface tension of water. They lift oil the way any surfactant does, but they produce a thin, short-lived foam rather than the thick lather of a shampoo. If you are expecting suds, this will look like it is not working.

It is worth separating those two things, because they are not the same property. Lather is what happens when a surfactant traps air. Cleaning is what happens when it surrounds oil. A surfactant can do one well and the other barely at all — which is why industrial and dishwasher detergents are deliberately formulated to foam as little as possible. Foam gets in the way there, so it is engineered out, and the cleaning is unaffected.

Conventional shampoos foam heavily because people expect it. Reetha does not, and that is the whole of the difference.

Radico Organic Reetha Fruit Powder is milled Sapindus mukorossi fruit, grown on our own certified organic farms. One ingredient in the pouch and nothing else. It carries no pigment, so it will not colour hair or shift a herbal colour you already have.

What each herb is for

Radico makes eight single herbs you can buy on their own. They are not variations on one another — they do three different jobs. (Our colour formulas draw on a wider set, including henna, indigo and manjistha.)

Cleanse

Used in place of shampoo. Both foam gently from natural saponins.

Two of the eight touch colour. Amla cools and deepens a henna result — which is exactly why it is in 23 of our 24 shades, as a deliberate part of the recipe. Colorless henna is named for what it does not do, but a long application can leave a faint golden cast on white or very light hair. The other six — including reetha — are colour‑neutral and can go into any Radico shade without changing it.

What is actually in reetha

Radico Organic Reetha Fruit Powder has one ingredient: milled Sapindus mukorossi fruit, grown and processed on our own certified organic farms. Nothing is added — no fillers, no synthetic preservatives, no fragrance.

Two saponins account for most of what it does. They are worth looking at together, because the difference between them explains how the whole thing works.

The difference between them

C46H74O16 − C41H66O12 = C5H8O4  ·  883.1 − 751.0 = 132.1

That difference is one sugar unit — a five-carbon sugar, attached to the chain, which is why the mass goes up by 132 rather than by the 150 a free sugar would weigh. Sapindoside B is sapindoside A with one more sugar on the end. Look at the two structures above and the shared core is obvious; the chain on the right is simply longer.

Why a plant makes soap

A saponin has two ends that want different things, and that is the whole mechanism.

Highly water-loving. This end stays in the water, and drags the oil out with it.

That is what a surfactant is, and it is what every soap and shampoo on the shelf is doing. The architecture is the same. What differs is what the water-loving end is made of — and that turns out to matter more than most people expect.

Not the same kind of surfactant

Surfactants are grouped by what happens at the water-loving end. It is a distinction that never appears on packaging, and it is the one that explains how hair feels afterwards.

Hair carries a negative charge of its own at washing pH. An anionic surfactant brings a negative charge to a negatively charged surface, and the interaction is not neutral: sulfates are extremely efficient at stripping sebum, and that efficiency is part of why hair can come out of a wash feeling squeaky and rough rather than smooth. The cuticle swells, the scales sit less flat, and the strand drags against itself.

Sapindosides carry no charge at all. The sugar chain is water-loving without being ionic, so the surfactant does its work on the oil without that additional interaction with the hair’s own surface.

What we notice. Hair washed with reetha runs through the fingers more easily than we expect it to — noticeably more so than after a conventional shampoo, and without a conditioner to do it. We are reporting that as an observation rather than a measurement: we have not run a controlled comparison, and combing force is something that can be measured properly if anyone cares to. What we can say is that the chemistry gives a reason to expect it.

Soapnut, but not soap

The name invites a comparison that does not hold up.

True soap is made by treating fat with alkali, and what comes out is alkaline — a bar of soap typically sits around pH 9 or 10. That is why washing hair with soap leaves it rough: alkaline conditions lift the cuticle scales away from the shaft. It is also why soap-based shampoo largely disappeared.

Saponins are not made that way. They are glycosides the plant assembles itself, and they carry no alkali at all.

Across repeated measurements the reading moved between 4.54 and 4.90. We give the range rather than picking a figure from inside it: this is a suspension of milled fruit, not a clear solution, so the probe reads whatever happens to be against it, and that is not uniform.

Hair’s own surface sits at roughly pH 4.5 to 5.5. Reetha mixed with water lands inside that range on its own, with nothing added to adjust it. Acidic conditions keep the cuticle scales lying flat against the shaft, which is the same reason conditioners and acid rinses are formulated on the acid side.

We also tested what happens on dilution. Taking a mix that read 4.90 and adding water to one part powder in six — half the concentration — raised the reading to 5.04. It moved, but only by 0.14, where an unbuffered acid would have risen by around 0.3. So there is some buffering here.

We ran the same test on shikakai, our other washing herb, which sits far lower at around pH 2 to 3. It did not move at all. Both buffer; shikakai holds very much more firmly.

To be fair about the comparison with shampoo: most modern shampoos are also pH-adjusted to sit in hair’s own range, so this is not a point of difference against them. It is a point of difference against soap, which is where the name sends people. What separates reetha from a conventional shampoo is the charge on the surfactant, not the pH.

These are our own readings, on a handheld meter calibrated against pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers before the session, from a mix made the way we describe on this site. They are not laboratory certificates, and water hardness will move them. We publish them because they are numbers you can check yourself with an inexpensive meter, and because we have not found anyone else publishing any. The one place it is harsher than soap

Everything above is the case for reetha being easier on hair than soap. In the eye, the comparison runs the other way, and we would rather tell you plainly than let you find out.

Saponins are surfactants, and surfactants sting. In our own experience reetha stings noticeably more than ordinary soap does — being a plant does not make a molecule gentle on the cornea, and the mechanism that lifts oil off hair does not distinguish between hair and eye.

There is a second problem that a liquid detergent does not have. This is milled fruit, so the wash carries fine particles that never dissolve. If some gets in your eye, those particles can lodge there and keep working after the water is gone, so the stinging continues rather than fading the way a rinse of shampoo would.

  • Tilt your head back when you rinse, and keep your eyes closed while the wash is on your hair.
  • If it gets in, flush with plenty of cool running water — and keep flushing well past the point it stops hurting, because the aim is to carry the particles out, not just dilute the liquid.
  • Do not rub. Rubbing works a particle further in.
  • If irritation persists after a thorough flush, see a doctor. Continuing pain can mean something is still in there.

This is not a reason to avoid reetha. It is a reason to be deliberate about how you rinse, and to keep it away from children who will not be.

What we will and will not claim

That saponins are non-ionic surfactants is physical chemistry rather than a health claim, and it is not in dispute. The structures above are the reason reetha lifts oil off hair at all, and the absence of a charged group is the reason it interacts with the hair surface differently from a sulfate.

What we have not done is measure any of the outcomes. We have not compared cleaning efficiency against a conventional shampoo, and we have not measured combing force. We are not claiming superiority on either count — we would need controlled comparisons to say that honestly. What we can give you is the mechanism, our own pH readings, and a clear note about which parts are observation rather than data.

Published work on Sapindus mukorossi covers a range of biological activity, most of it concerning isolated compounds in laboratory conditions rather than milled fruit on a human scalp. We are not claiming this powder treats any scalp condition, and in the United States a cosmetic may not make that claim.

Radico Organic Reetha Fruit Powder is a cosmetic product for external use on hair and scalp. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. Sapindus mukorossi belongs to the Sapindaceae family. Despite the common name soapnut, the fruit is not a tree nut and is not botanically related to one — but as with any plant material, patch test on the inner forearm 48 hours before a full application, and stop use if irritation develops.

Reetha is used differently from the rest of the range. The other herbs are pastes you leave on for half an hour. This one you wash with and rinse out — there is nothing to develop and nothing to wait for.

One part powder, three parts water

That is the whole recipe, by weight. What is worth knowing is that the same ratio behaves completely differently here than it does with the other herbs.

Reetha is the outlier. At the ratio that makes every other powder in the range hold its shape, reetha stays thin enough to pour — which is exactly what you want for something you are going to wash with. A paste would sit on the hair; a liquid runs through it and reaches the scalp.

How much to make

Enough to wet the scalp and work through the roots. Unlike a mask, you are not trying to coat every strand from root to tip.

Weigh the powder rather than spooning it — a spoonful of milled fruit can vary by as much as a third depending on the spoon and how it is scooped. A 100 g pouch gives roughly seven to ten washes at shoulder length.

Washing with it

  1. Mix and let it stand 5 minutes. Stir the powder into warm water and leave it. The saponins need a moment to come out of the fruit, and the liquid thickens slightly as they do.
  2. Wet your hair first. Reetha works on wet hair, the same as any wash.
  3. Pour it onto the scalp in sections, not all in one place. It is thin, so it will run — work in parts and tilt your head to control where it goes.
  4. Massage the scalp with your fingertips for two or three minutes. This is where the cleaning happens. Expect very little foam; that is normal and is not a sign it is not working.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, head tilted back. Rinse for longer than you think you need to — this is milled fruit, and fine particles settle at the nape and behind the ears.

Keep it out of your eyes

Reetha stings more than ordinary soap does, and because this is milled fruit rather than a dissolved detergent, fine particles can lodge in the eye and keep stinging after the water is gone. Tilt your head back throughout, keep your eyes closed while the wash is on, and if any gets in, flush with plenty of cool running water — well past the point it stops hurting. Do not rub. If irritation persists after a thorough flush, see a doctor.

How often: two to three times a week suits most people. Reetha removes oil without stripping, so it does not need the daily frequency a strong detergent shampoo trains hair into.

If you are coming from a sulfate shampoo, expect a few weeks of adjustment. Scalps that have been washed daily with a strong detergent tend to produce oil at the rate that washing demands, and that rate takes time to settle.

Afterwards

Hair usually comes out feeling softer and easier to run fingers through than after a conventional shampoo, and often without needing a conditioner. That is what we notice; we have not measured it. The chemistry gives a reason to expect it — sapindosides are non-ionic surfactants, so they lift oil without the charge interaction that sulfates have with the hair’s own surface.

If your hair does want conditioning afterwards, methi and amla are the two in the range for the strand rather than the scalp.

Reetha and colour

Reetha is in 1 of Radico’s 24 shades — Sun Blonde alone. That is the fewest of any of our eight single herbs, and it makes sense: this is a cleanser rather than a colour or conditioning herb.

It carries no pigment, so washing with it will not shift a herbal colour you already have. It is a wash, and it behaves like one.

One thing worth timing. Do not wash with reetha immediately after a plant colour. Henna and indigo both keep developing for up to 72 hours after application, and a surfactant wash in that window will take some of the result with it. Give it two to three days.
