Auburn Red - Organic Hair Color
Auburn Red
Colour Me Organic Premium
Certified Organic Hair Colour Powder · 3.5oz
The red henna gives on its own. Six organic herbs, and this is the only shade we make where henna comes first on the ingredient list. There is no manjistha in it either — nothing else in the pouch is making red.
Day one will look wrong. After a faint green cast at the rinse, this shade goes bright orange for a day — much brighter than the auburn you ordered. It deepens and cools over days two and three. Don't judge it on the first evening.
Hair darker than Auburn Red will not take it. We have tested it. Plant colour adds and never lifts, so dark melanin stays underneath and wins. This shade is for light to medium brown, blonde or greying hair.

What "100% organic" means here
Not 99%, not 99.9% — every herb in the pouch is certified organic, and there is no base powder or carrier underneath them. Each shade is vacuum-sealed to slow oxidation before you open it, and shipped by air from our production facility in India so newer stock reaches you.
Embrace the Timeless Beauty of Auburn Red
Auburn Red sits between red and brown — deep enough to read as natural, warm enough to catch the light. Indoors it reads as a grounded auburn; in daylight the copper comes forward. Because plant pigment layers over the colour you already have instead of replacing it, your own variation stays underneath, which is why it shifts between rooms rather than returning one flat tone.

How it differs from chemical colour
Red is the colour a bottle loses fastest. Red pigment molecules are the smallest and least light-stable of the lot — and once the cuticle has been lifted to put them in, it never closes back the way it was. That leaves an open route out, which is why a chemical red gets redone more often than any other shade.
Nothing is opened to put this colour there. Lawsone forms a covalent bond with keratin in the outer layers, so it wears as the hair wears rather than rinsing out. That's the whole trade: it costs you the option of going lighter, and saves you everything that comes with it.
- Powder-based organic colour for men and women
- Certified organic by ECOCERT
- No peroxide, ammonia, PPD, parabens or synthetic pigment
- Works on light to medium brown, blonde or greying hair — it will not show on hair darker than this shade
- Colours grey most vividly of all; on darker hair that reads as highlights
- At-home application, no developer to mix
- Not suitable for anyone with a known indigo or plant-dye allergy — patch test first
What to expect over three days
- Right after rinsing — a faint green cast over the warmth. That's the indigo before it has met the air. Temporary.
- First 12 to 24 hours — the green clears and it goes bright orange, much brighter than the finished shade. This is the stage that worries people, and it is normal.
- Days two and three — deepens and cools into auburn. Judge your colour here.
Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stalls at that raw day-one orange. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.
Auburn Red or Copper Brown?
Both are red-brown, and the difference is which way they lean. Auburn Red runs deeper and truer red, with less gold in it. Copper Brown runs orange-gold — the warmer, brighter of the two, and the one that shows more on darker hair.

There is no version of these photos on dark brown or black hair — we tested it, and the red doesn't show. Within lighter hair, depth still shifts with your starting colour, grey percentage, porosity and processing time.

Ingredients
Six certified organic herbs, and no base powder or carrier underneath them. Ingredient lists run in order of quantity — and this is one of only three shades we make where henna comes first, alongside Mahogany and Burgundy. There is no manjistha in it either: nothing is building a second warm red alongside the henna. The hibiscus further down is a red too, but a cool one. And one thing the order cannot tell you: Mahogany carries these same six herbs in this same order. The two sit in different collections — this one in Red, that one in Black & Brown — but the labels are identical. Everything separating them is in the proportions, which we don't publish. If you are choosing between them, compare the photographs rather than the ingredient lists.
Important: this shade contains indigo, which a small number of people react to. Patch test before use, especially if you have sensitive skin or have reacted to plant dyes before. Stop use if irritation occurs. 100% organic. Made in India.
FAQ
Yes. Indigo is second on the ingredient list for this shade — enough to hold henna's orange back into auburn, not enough to build a brown. If you have a known indigo or plant-dye sensitivity, don't use it. If you're unsure, patch test and wait 48 hours.
Not on day one — that is the shade working normally. After a faint green cast at the rinse, the henna comes forward and reads much brighter and more orange than the finished auburn. It deepens and cools over days two and three as the indigo finishes. What isn't right is a flat orange still sitting there on day four; that usually means the development stopped early, almost always from force-drying the hair.
No. We have tested it: on hair darker than Auburn Red itself, the red doesn't show — not faintly, not with longer processing. Plant pigment only adds and never lifts, so the melanin you already have stays underneath and dark melanin wins. If your hair is dark brown or black and you want warmth, Copper Brown shows it in the light without claiming to change your colour.
Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Warmth genuinely helps this colour along, which is why a shower cap works so well — it holds warmth and moisture together. A hair dryer gives you the warmth and takes the moisture, and moisture is what carries the pigment onto the fibre and lets the reaction finish. Force-drying leaves the colour stalled at that raw day-one orange.
That is the indigo before it has met the air. It sits over the warmth for a day and clears on its own. The red underneath is already forming.
It colours grey readily — grey has no melanin of its own to compete, so it takes plant pigment more easily than pigmented hair does. It lands most vivid of all on grey. On darker hair with greys, the greys will take the red while the rest changes less, which reads as highlights rather than uniform coverage.
Typically about 30–45 days, depending on your hair type and washing routine. Because lawsone is bonded to the keratin rather than deposited inside the shaft, it wears down gradually rather than rinsing out — so it softens rather than growing out in a hard line. Strong or clarifying shampoos, frequent washing and very hot water all shorten it.
No. This is a non-oxidative plant colour with no peroxide or ammonia-type lightening agents, so it deposits colour rather than lifting your natural pigment. A lighter result requires starting with a lighter base.

It's made from certified organic herbs with no synthetic additives, but any colour product can irritate some people, and indigo in particular causes reactions in a small number. Patch test before full application, especially with sensitive skin or a history of reactions to plant dyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

The US Pouch
Ordered as Needed, Flown In, Shipped Fresh
Every pouch we sell is handled the same way, from the factory in India to your door, so that it reaches you as close to freshly made as we can manage — and so all 24 shades stay in stock.
Sealed at the factory
Dried, blended, vacuum-packed
The herbs are dried and blended at the factory and vacuum-sealed there, while the powder is fresh. Air is what ages plant powder — henna's pigment breaks down with oxygen, and air-exposed powder smells much stronger.
Flown in
By the pallet, by air
Each shade is ordered in units of 25, and the shades due for restocking are combined into a pallet of about 1,000 pouches, flown to Torrance, California — days in the air instead of months at sea.
Checked monthly
Each shade, on its own schedule
We check every shade's sales each month and forecast demand from our sales history, with the help of AI. When a shade drops below three to six months of stock, we order about a year to eighteen months' worth — enough to stay in stock, not so much that it sits.
18 months+
Left on every pouch we send
We ship the oldest stock first, and take any batch with less than 18 months left out of sale. Every order arrives with at least 18 months before its expiry date.
