Like the oily scalp, this has no classical disease name. What the texts offer instead is Vata — and the fact of getting older.
Three different things get called dry hair, and only one of them is about oil.
There is the hair someone was born with. There is the hair someone has at sixty, which is not the hair they had at twenty. And there is hair that has been damaged, which feels dry for reasons that have nothing to do with how much oil is reaching it.
The classical texts have something to say about the first two, and they treat neither as a disorder. The third is the one most people actually have, and it is not a subject the Samhitas addressed at all.

The two blanks are not an oversight. They are the two ends of the same axis, and in this system an axis is something a person sits on rather than something that goes wrong.

What sitting on an axis means
Prakriti is fixed at birth. If yours is Vata-predominant, the texts say your hair is dry and fine, and they say it as a description rather than a diagnosis. There is no chapter on curing it, because there is nothing in this framework to cure.
The Kapha-predominant person, at the other end, gets the hair the literature praises — and a scalp that needs washing more often. Neither end is the healthy one. That is what an axis is.
Which leaves a real question
If dry hair is a constitution rather than a disorder, why does it so often feel like something that changed? People do not usually arrive at a page like this because their hair has always been fine and dry. They arrive because it did not used to be like this.
The classical account has an answer for that, and it is not about the hair at all. It is about what year it is. That is the next section.

It is about what year it is
The classical texts divide a life into stages, and they assign a dosha to each one. Not as a metaphor, and not as a personality description — as a statement about which qualities predominate in a body at that point in its course.

The boundaries vary between authors. Charaka and Sushruta divide the middle stage differently, and Sushruta places the beginning of the third later. We give the division most commonly cited and note that it is not the only one.
Which explains the whole thing
Ruksha — dry — is the first of Vata’s qualities. If the later stage of life is Vata-predominant, then in this framework hair getting drier with age is not something going wrong. It is the stage doing what the stage does.
And the texts do not confine it to hair. The same increase is described as showing in the skin, in the joints, in sleep, in the tissues generally. Hair drying is one visible instance of a change the system says is happening everywhere.
The same line, drawn a fourth time
Our page on greying sets out Kalaja Palitya — greying in its own time — which the texts decline to treat as a disorder. This is the same move.
Fine hair in a Vata-predominant person is a constitution. Grey hair at the age hair greys is a stage. Drier hair in the third stage of life is a stage. A tradition that named a great many things as diseases kept declining to name these, and it did so consistently enough that the pattern is clearly deliberate.
We are not claiming the classical authors were right about the physiology. We are pointing out, for the fourth time on this site, that they drew a line the hair care market spends a great deal of money erasing.
The other account also has an answer
In its own words
Modern trichology describes several changes with age, and they run in the same direction. Sebaceous activity, which rises sharply at puberty, declines from middle age onward — so there is less oil reaching the hair than there was. Fibre diameter changes. The proportion of hairs in the growing phase falls.
These are separate observations arrived at by separate means, and they happen to point the same way as the classical account. That is a coincidence of direction, not a confirmation of mechanism. Declining sebaceous output is not what Vata vriddhi means, and we are not going to say that it is.
And one thing neither account is talking about
There is a reason ends feel drier than roots that has nothing to do with age, constitution or oil, and it is worth putting here because it is the most overlooked fact about long hair.
How old is the hair at your shoulders
Hair grows about a centimetre a month.
Which means the hair at your shoulders is roughly two to three years old, and the hair at your waist closer to six.
Every wash, every brush, every hour of sun, every dryer and every colour in those years happened to that piece of hair, and it is still there. Hair has no repair mechanism. It is not living tissue. Nothing that happens to it is undone.
So the ends of long hair are not dry because they are short of oil. They are dry because they are old — and that is a different problem, with a different set of honest answers. It is the next section.

Most dry hair is not short of oil
A correction
Until recently this page opened with: “Dry hair occurs when the scalp doesn’t produce enough natural oils.”
That is at most half of it, and for most people it is the smaller half. A scalp can produce a perfectly ordinary amount of sebum while the hair still feels dry — and it usually does.
Two quite separate things produce the feeling of dryness, and they are worth keeping apart because they have different causes and different honest answers.

Sebum is produced at the follicle and travels along the shaft by contact — hair against hair, and the mechanical action of brushing. It has no other means of getting anywhere. On short hair it reaches most of the length. On long hair it does not come close.
And this is where hair shape matters
A straight shaft is an efficient path. A tightly curled one is not — every bend is a place the oil does not continue past, and the more turns there are, the less distance sebum covers.
Which means that coily and tightly curled hair is characteristically drier at the ends while the scalp produces a completely normal amount of oil. That is a geometry problem, not a deficiency, and it is worth being clear about because it is often described as though the hair were failing at something.
It is also the honest reason oiling the lengths is a long-standing practice in so many places, including India. You are putting oil where sebum was never going to arrive.

The cuticle is a layer of overlapping scales on the outside of the fibre. When they lie flat, the surface is smooth: light reflects evenly, neighbouring hairs slide past one another, and water leaves slowly.
When they are lifted or eroded, all three go the other way. Light scatters, so hair looks dull. Hairs catch on each other, so it tangles and feels rough. Water leaves faster, so it dries out sooner. Every one of those reads as “dry” — and none of them is about how much oil is present.

The thing nobody selling hair products likes to say
Nothing repairs a damaged cuticle. Hair is not living tissue and has no repair mechanism. There are no cells in it to rebuild anything.
What products can do — ours included — is coat the surface. A film sits over the roughness, fills the gaps, lets neighbouring hairs slide, and reflects light more evenly. That is a real effect and it is worth having. It is also temporary, and it washes out.
Any product described as repairing, rebuilding or restoring the fibre is describing a coating. The only permanent solution to a damaged length is to cut it off and grow a new one — and given that hair grows about a centimetre a month, that is a slower answer than anyone wants. It is still the true one.
Which leaves two honest things to do: stop adding damage, and coat what is already there. Both have answers, and one of them is not in our shop.

Sneha — and what we do not have
Sneha means oil, and it means the therapy of applying it. It is the classical answer to Vata, and it is not a minor limb of the treatment. Where the qualities in excess are dry, light and mobile, the response is the quality that opposes all three.

The classical hair preparations belonging to this limb are oils. Neelibhringadi Taila pairs indigo with bhringaraja in a base of sesame or coconut oil, and it is a formulation that has been made for a very long time. Taila in the classical texts usually means sesame oil specifically; Narikela Taila is coconut.
Which brings us to a problem
Radico does not make an oil. We make powders. If you have read this far because your hair is dry and you wanted to know what the tradition recommends, the answer is a category of product we do not sell.
We could have written this page without mentioning that. It would have meant leaving out the main thing.
If you are going to buy an oil, here is what we would look at
We have no commercial interest in this section, which is the reason to trust it more than the rest of the page rather than less.
The one hair oil with real published work behind it
Coconut oil. Work published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science by Rele and Mohile compared coconut, sunflower and mineral oils on hair, measuring protein loss after washing. Coconut oil reduced it; the other two did not.
The proposed explanation is that lauric acid — the principal fatty acid in coconut oil — has a straight chain and a low molecular weight, and an affinity for hair proteins, so it penetrates the shaft rather than sitting on it. Most oils do not.
Some honesty about the limits. These were laboratory measurements on hair tresses, not clinical trials, and protein loss is one measure among many. It is still considerably better evidence than most things in hair care have, and it happens to point at the oil the classical texts were already using. We are not selling it, so take the observation for what it is.
And what we do have
Three of our powders coat the strand. Coating is a real effect and a limited one — it improves how the surface behaves, and it washes out.
Methi
Trigonella foenum-graecum
The most useful of the three for this. Its galactomannan forms a gel that leaves a film, which is why hair comes out easier to comb through. Mix at one part powder to five parts water — it drinks more than anything else we make.
Its anthraquinones associate with keratin at the surface, and the leaf’s polysaccharides add a film. No added protein of any kind, which matters if protein masks have left your hair stiff. One part powder to three parts water.
Acidic, and acidic conditions keep cuticle scales lying flat — which is most of what we perceive as smoothness. Classically Sheeta, cooling, despite being sour, which the texts treat as a peculiarity of the fruit.
None of these repairs anything. They sit on the surface, they improve how it behaves, and the next wash takes them off. Said plainly, that sounds like less than the labels in most shops promise. It is also all any of them are doing.
The half that costs nothing
Since damage does not reverse, the largest single thing available to anyone with dry hair is to stop adding to it. This is unglamorous and it is free.
Heat — the biggest lever for most people. Lower settings, less often, and never on soaking-wet hair.
Bleach and peroxide — the damage is chemical and permanent. Fewer processes, further apart.
Friction — detangle from the ends upward, and be gentler when hair is wet, which is when it is weakest.
Sun — a hat, over months and years, does more than any product.
That reetha, shikakai, bhringraj or methi deliver vitamins A, B6, C or E to the hair. This page previously said so, with a structure diagram for each. The explanations attached described dietary vitamin function, and one of them said vitamin A both reduces and produces sebum in consecutive sentences.
That methi treats dandruff or prevents shedding. Also previously on this page. Both are drug claims in the United States.
That bhringraj is a “potent hair vitalizer”. It is a leaf with an unusual number of hair-related synonyms in the classical nighantus. That is a fact about names in a text.
That anything here repairs, rebuilds or restores the hair fibre. Coating is not repair, and hair has no repair mechanism.
A note on our sources
We are not Sanskritists, and we have not read the Samhitas in the original. The material on Vata’s qualities, the stages of life and the therapy of oleation is standard Ayurvedic pharmacology, drawn from reviews and textbooks rather than verse we have checked. The age boundaries for the three stages differ between Charaka and Sushruta, and we have said so rather than picking one.
The material on cuticle structure, sebum distribution and oxidative damage is ordinary trichology and is not specific to any product.
