Does Certification
Change the Colour?

People ask us whether certified organic hair colour works better than ordinary natural henna. The honest answer is no — and the reason why is the whole point of this page.

The plant is the same plant. Certified organic henna and uncertified henna both carry lawsone, the same molecule, which bonds to hair the same way. Certified indigo and uncertified indigo both turn blue by the same reaction. Certification does not change a pigment, and it does not make a shade last longer or cover more.

What certification changes is what you can be sure is not in the pouch. That sounds like a smaller thing. Over the years a strand of hair stays on your head, it turns out to be the larger one.

Three things sold under two words

“Natural” has no legal definition in US cosmetics. It covers two very different products — and one of them can genuinely outperform ours.

Why we still make this choice

The Strand Keeps a Record

If a product with a synthetic dye added covers grey better, why would anyone choose one without? Because of how long a hair stays on your head.

A strand grows about half an inch a month and, in its growth phase, stays attached for years before it is shed — we set the growth cycle out in full on our certification page. The ends of shoulder-length hair are roughly two years old. Colour every six weeks and those ends have been through seventeen applications — one after another, with nothing in between to reset them. Hair is dead tissue. It does not repair; it accumulates.

What the tip of a strand has been through. Every application lands on hair that still carries the last. Nothing undoes any of them until the hair is cut.

This is where the grey-coverage advantage turns into a question of what you are paying for it with. The additive that covers grey more evenly is, in most such products, PPD or a synthetic dye — the compounds that need a developer, that oxidise, and that a patch test exists to warn you about. Where they do their work is on the strand. Where they do it is seventeen times over.

We are not going to tell you that plant colour is free of consequence — every application is a wet paste on your hair for an hour. What we can tell you is that the plant leaves nothing on the strand except pigment, and that the pigment is one your hair cannot be oxidised by. Over one application that is a small difference. Over seventeen it is the difference.

And the uncertified plant colour?

If it is genuinely just the plant, it is the same as ours in every way that touches your hair. The only thing certification adds is that someone outside the company has confirmed that it is genuinely just the plant. That matters because products sold as natural henna with PPD added, sometimes undeclared, are not hypothetical — regulators have issued warnings about them. You are not paying us for a better pigment. You are paying for the audit that says nothing else is in there.

If you have a supplier you trust and a label you can read, an uncertified plant colour is a perfectly good choice, and we would rather say that than pretend the plant knows who certified it.

What nobody has measured, including us

  • Certified against uncertified, same species, same hair. No one has run that comparison and published it. We assume the pigment does not know the difference, and we believe the assumption is sound — but it is an assumption.
  • How much a repeated plant application changes the fibre over years. We say “leaves nothing but pigment”; we have not measured the strand after seventeen applications any more than anyone has measured it after seventeen of the other kind.
  • Whether the grey-coverage gap closes with repeat use. Plant colour builds on grey over several applications. Whether it eventually matches a synthetic dye, we have not tested head to head.
