All four of our ash shades put indigo over a light base. What differs is how much indigo, and whether there is any henna underneath it.

  • Darkest Ash — indigo second, nothing diluting it, no henna. The deepest and coolest.
  • Ash Blonde — indigo second, colourless henna above it, no henna.
  • Light Ash Blonde — indigo second, colourless henna above it, and a little henna third. The softest of the four.
  • Dark Ash — indigo fifth, four pigment-free herbs ahead of it, no henna. The lightest of the four, despite the name.

What kind of colour this is

An ash tone is blue over a light base. Our other three ash shades leave henna out entirely, because henna's warm red under a blue reads brown rather than ash.

This one keeps a little. Colourless henna leads the list and keeps the shade light; indigo comes second and gives the blue; henna sits third, adding just enough warmth that the result reads soft rather than cold.

What to expect

  • Right after rinsing — slightly blue or green. That's the indigo before it has met the air. Expected.
  • Over 48 hours — the tone settles.
  • Day three — judge your colour here, not on the first evening.

Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stalls at the blue-green stage. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.

Important: this shade contains indigo, which a small number of people react to. Patch test before use, especially if you have sensitive skin or have reacted to plant dyes before. Stop use if irritation occurs. 100% organic. Made in India.

FAQ

Yes. Indigo is second on the ingredient list — it is the blue in an ash tone. If you have a known indigo or plant-dye sensitivity, don't use it. If you're unsure, patch test and wait 48 hours.

Darkest Ash, Dark Ash and Ash Blonde contain no henna at all. Light Ash Blonde does — third on the list, below the indigo. That small amount of warmth is what keeps this ash soft rather than cold, and it also means the colour bonds to the keratin the way our henna shades do, so it holds a little longer than the henna-free ones.

No — that is expected. Indigo arrives as a colourless precursor and oxidizes in air; before that reaction has run, it reads blue-green. It settles over the next 48 hours. Judge your colour on day three, not on the first evening.

Only as a soft cool cast. Plant pigment adds and never lifts, so on medium brown hair this reads as a light ash tint and on anything darker it won't show as a colour change. If your hair is darker and you want a visible ash, Darkest Ash Blonde carries the most indigo of our ash shades.

Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Warmth helps the colour along, which is why a shower cap works so well — it holds warmth and moisture together. A hair dryer gives you the warmth and takes the moisture, and moisture is what carries the pigment onto the fibre and lets the reaction finish. Force-drying leaves the colour stalled at the blue-green stage.

Not on this shade. The vinegar trick works on henna-based colours with no indigo in them, where mild acidity helps release lawsone from the leaf. There is indigo here, second on the list, and acidity holds indigo back — so it would cost you as much as it gained.

It is designed to be light — colourless henna leads the ingredient list, ahead of both herbs that carry colour. Beyond that, resistant or low-porosity hair takes it slowly. Two things help: start on genuinely clean hair with no conditioner or silicone, and give it a full hour rather than the minimum. A second application a few days later builds more depth than extending the first one.

It blends grey into a soft ash rather than covering it. Grey takes plant pigment readily — it has no melanin of its own to compete — so on lighter hair with greys the result blends. On darker hair the greys will take the tone while the rest barely changes, which reads as highlights rather than uniform coverage.

Typically about 30–45 days, depending on your hair type and washing routine. Because there is henna in this shade, part of the colour is bonded to the keratin rather than held in the outer layers — so it holds a little longer than our henna-free ash shades. Strong or clarifying shampoos, frequent washing and very hot water all shorten it.

No. This is a non-oxidative plant colour with no peroxide or ammonia-type lightening agents, so it deposits colour rather than lifting your natural pigment. A lighter result requires starting with a lighter base.

Tell us. This shade takes a couple of days to settle, so give it three days first. First-time customers who don't get the result they expected can have a different shade sent free, or a full refund on the colour.

It's made from certified organic herbs with no synthetic additives, but any colour product can irritate some people, and indigo in particular causes reactions in a small number. I was a little disappointed, I purchased wheat blonde and followed the instructions and did not get the results I was looking for , it did not cover my gray but it did make my hair softer , I have less than 30% gray hair mostly on my hair line and I having light brownish blonde hair with a little gray , what color would you recommend, that was my first time.

Does not dye grey hair whether I leave dye on for 1 hour or 3 1/2 hours

I have very short hair, much shorter on the sides than the top as I have a mohawk and I let the hair on the sides grow in a bit between haircuts. I have only used the dark brown color and I have dyed my hair 4 times. While the color is pleasing to me, the dye will do nothing to color my grey hair. The first time I used it I left the dye paste on my hair for 1 hour. The last time - today-I left it on my hair for 3 hours and twenty minutes and it still didn't even touch my grey hairs which are all near my hairline. Each of the four times I used the product, I blow dried around the edges of my hairline for 1-2 minutes as instructed every 15 - 20 minutes and still nothing. I loaded up the paste along the edges every time. During the second and third hair dye experiences, I even sat under a steamer cap hoping the hot steam would keep the paste moist. There was no difference in my grey hair. I love how principled the company is and love their comprehensive website with all the instructions and how to tell if hair is porous , and how incredible clean and healthy and humanely sourced their products are. I wish I could continue patronizing their company but if the product doesn't work for me and doesn't do what they say it will do, I'll have to move on. Very disappointing!

Great coverage and pleasant scent.

Tried other henna brands but none of them worked. When I discovered Radico I was not sure how the color will come out. First I tried Champagne Blonde which covered my grey hair well but the all over color was a little too light. Next I tried Beige blonde and it came out just the way I wanted to. The greys are light blonde and the rest of my hair darker beige and golden. The color smella very pleasant ( my cats are very attracted to it ). I am very happy to have discovered Radico colors since they are natural and none irritating.

I left my color on for an hour and 20 minutes and followed directions with the boiling water and using the hair dryer a couple times during application. I also reapplied a couple days after first application. My color faded quickly even though I have rinsed and not washed my hair.

Color that lasts

It's a nice product, when applying I noticed it doesn't have any harsh chemical smell. Be prepared to commit two hours for the process. After the first application your hair will turn orange but during the second you will achieve your desired shade. Trust the process.
They did recommend wrapping the beard in plastic but I didn't have any at home. It would have been nice if it was included with the packet. Something form fitting that contours to the jaw line.
Overall I would give it 4.5 out of 5.

Do your research and NO IT DOESN'T FADE

As much as they may have tried to help, customer service that answered my questions were wrong about this key piece of information - this DOES NOT FADE as I was told several times. I never would have tried had I known. The colors no matter what I have done after the initial color has come out red. And when I checked back I was told they could not help me anymore and I was referred to the director but I never heard back (as of yet). It is a bummer because I was growing out my gray and now I have to start again BUT I also have hair that looks terrible.

Different browns

I do love the products but I am struggling with the colors I purchase and they all turn my hair to a reddish color. My natural color is brown although the grey has taken over. I started with light brown and it turned out almost all red. I contacted Radico and they suggested go to brown which I did. I had mostly brown hair but then it turned to a lot of red. I contacted Radico again and they suggested dark brown. I loved the color and had a little red but after a few weeks I had a lot of red again. I don't like the red streaks in it. Any suggestions as how to achieve just brown hair. I am okay if it turns out a lighter brown or dark brown, I just want brown with no red in it. I love how natural your products are I have also used the conditioners and bar soap, I just need help in obtaining a color without any red in it.

Headache after applying - soft black color

The color worked and it covered my greys and turned my hair black. But I developed a headache after applying the hair color and only reduced after I washed my hair off with soap the next day. I have applied henna and indigo before with other brands, but never developed a headache before. Would not apply again.

I tried an apple cider vinegar rinse, using hardly any shampoo, Hot water to rinse, and Warm water to rinse. It left my hair heavy, limp, and with a film. I have used different bar shampoos over the last few years, and this one is definitely not right for me.

Fresh new look!!

I loved the fresh lift of color it gave me. It also covered my grays pretty well. I will definitely use this again!!
