Organic Hibiscus Flower Powder For Hair
Radico Organic Hibiscus Flower Powder is milled Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower, certified organic. One ingredient in the pouch and nothing else — no fillers, no synthetic preservatives, no fragrance, no PPD, no ammonia. Net weight 100 g (3.53 oz).
What it does on hair
On white, grey or very light hair, hibiscus leaves a purple tint. In our test — white hair swatches, one hour, then rinsed — the powder mixed with plain water came out blue-purple, and the same powder mixed with lemon juice came out red-purple.
On brown or black hair, expect to see little or nothing. Plant pigment adds colour and never lifts it, so a purple tint needs a light base to show.
Why the colour changes
Hibiscus owes its colour to anthocyanins, the same family of pigments as red cabbage, blackcurrant and blueberry. The molecule changes shape with acidity, and each shape reads as a different colour: red on the acid side, purple and then blue as acidity falls. Lemon juice pushes it towards red; plain water lets it sit further towards blue.
How long it lasts
We have not tested how long the colour lasts. Anthocyanins sit on the surface of the hair rather than bonding to it the way henna does, so we would expect a hibiscus tint to fade sooner than henna — but expecting is not measuring.
How to use it
- Start with clean hair, free of conditioner, oil or styling product.
- Mix the powder with warm water into a smooth paste. For a redder purple, add lemon juice or apple cider vinegar.
- Apply, cover with a shower cap, and leave for about an hour.
- Rinse with water.
Strand test first. Hibiscus behaves differently depending on what is already on your hair and what you mix it with.
In our hair colours
Hibiscus is in 13 of our 24 shades. In Honey Blonde it comes first on the ingredient list; in every other shade it sits third or lower, a small share working underneath henna and indigo. None of those shades will turn your hair purple. If purple is what you want, this single herb is the way to get it.

What we do not claim
Hibiscus has a long history in Ayurvedic hair care. We sell this powder for its colour. We make no claims about hair growth, hair fall, dandruff or premature greying.
Before you use it
Patch test on the inner forearm 48 hours before a full application. If it itches or reddens, wash it off and do not use it.

Freshness
Sealed Airtight, Ordered Little and Often
Airtight, not vacuum
So the powder stays loose
Some herb powders pack into a hard block under vacuum, and customers asked us to stop. These pouches are sealed airtight with the air left in.
3 years
Unopened, from manufacture
Without the vacuum, we set a shorter limit than our hair colours. The batch number, manufacture date and expiry date are printed on every pouch.
Ordered small
Little time on our shelves
We order single herbs in the smallest amounts we can, so each pouch spends as little time as possible waiting to be sent.
12 months+
Left on every pouch we send
We ship the oldest stock first, and take any batch with less than 12 months left out of sale.
Once opened, press the air out, reseal tightly and keep it dry. Applies to orders shipped by Radico USA. More on freshness →
