Where the colour comes from
Indigo leaves store their pigment as indican, which has no colour of its own. Water and the leaf's own enzymes release it, and in air it oxidises into blue indigo and, more slowly, into red-violet indirubin. That is why the colour keeps changing for two to three days after you rinse, and why the first rinse looks green rather than brown.
What it is for
- Cooling and deepening a henna result that came out too orange or too red.
- Brown and black with henna — henna first and indigo after, or the two mixed. More indigo reads darker and cooler; more henna reads warmer.
- A second pass when an indigo shade developed lighter than expected, usually because the hair dried too fast.
On its own over grey or light hair, indigo reads blue rather than brown. That is why it is almost always used with henna.

How to use it
- Start with clean hair, free of conditioner, oil or styling product. Dry hair is best; towel-dried damp hair also works.
- Mix with warm water into a smooth paste and use it straight away — indigo paste does not keep.
- Do not add vinegar or lemon juice. Acidity helps henna but holds indigo back.
- Apply evenly, cover with a shower cap to keep the paste damp, and rinse with water only.
- Air-dry. No blow-dryer or heat for the first 24 hours. The colour is still forming after you rinse, and that reaction needs moisture. Force-drying stops it partway — often at a violet stage — and it does not restart when the hair is wetted again.
- Skip shampoo for 72 hours and judge the colour on day three, not on the first evening.
Indigo is held in the outer layers of the hair rather than bonded the way henna is, so an indigo result softens over a few weeks. Strand test first.
Before you use it
Patch test on the inner forearm 48 hours before a full application. Some people are sensitive to indigo. If it itches or reddens, wash it off and do not use it.
