Wine Red - Organic Hair Color
Wine Red
Colour Me Organic Premium
Certified Organic Hair Color 3.5oz
A wine red built without indigo. Six organic herbs, and this is the only shade we make where manjistha comes first — the depth here comes from a second red pigment rather than from blue laid over the top.
No green stage, no purple risk. Those both come from indigo, and there is none in this blend.

Embrace the Depth of Natural Wine Red
Wine Red is a deep, luxurious shade inspired by the richness of fine red wine. This bold yet refined tone blends red with subtle depth to create a dramatic, dimensional finish that looks both natural and sophisticated.

Unlike artificial crimson tones, Wine Red delivers warmth with elegance — vibrant yet balanced, expressive yet polished. In natural light, the shade reveals layered richness and a luminous glow that enhances your overall presence.

Perfect for those who want a confident, statement-making color while maintaining a natural botanical finish.

Wine Red, Burgundy or Mahogany?
Burgundy and Mahogany both open with henna and get their depth from indigo — a blue laid over a red.
Wine Red has no indigo at all. It opens with manjistha, the only shade we make that does, and builds depth from a second red pigment instead. That is why it reads as wine rather than as a red with brown in it — and why it has no green stage at the rinse. See all three on the colour chart →

What kind of colour this is
Red is the colour a bottle loses fastest. Red pigment molecules are the smallest and least light-stable of the lot — and once the cuticle has been lifted to put them in, it never closes back the way it was. That leaves an open route out.
Nothing is opened to put this colour there. Lawsone forms a covalent bond with keratin in the outer layers, so it wears as the hair wears rather than rinsing out.
- Powder-based organic colour for men and women
- Certified organic by ECOCERT
- No peroxide, ammonia, PPD, parabens or synthetic pigment
- Contains no indigo — no green stage at the rinse, and it cannot stall at purple
- Colours grey most vividly of all; on darker hair it reads as depth rather than a colour change
- At-home application, no developer to mix
What to expect
- Right after rinsing — brighter and warmer than the finished wine. Henna arrives first. No green cast.
- First day or two — the manjistha settles and the depth arrives.
- Where it lands — a deep wine red. Judge it on day two, not the first evening.
Worth trying: the acid step. Add 1–2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to the mixed paste and let it rest 15–30 minutes before applying. Henna's pigment releases more readily in mildly acidic conditions. This works because there is no indigo in this shade — don't carry it over to Burgundy, Mahogany or any shade with indigo in it.

Ingredients
Six certified organic herbs, and no base powder or carrier underneath them. Ingredient lists run in order of quantity, and this is the only shade we make where manjistha comes first. There is no indigo in it at all — one of six shades we make without it — so the depth in this red comes from a second red pigment rather than from blue laid over the top.
100% organic. Made in India. This shade contains no indigo. Any color product can irritate some people, so patch test before full application, especially with sensitive skin or a history of reactions to plant dyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.
FAQ
No. This shade does not contain indigo — which is why there is no green stage at the rinse and no risk of the colour stalling at purple. The depth in this red comes from manjistha, a second red pigment, rather than from blue laid over the top.
Burgundy and Mahogany both open with henna and get their depth from indigo — a blue laid over a red. Wine Red has no indigo at all. Instead it opens with manjistha, the only shade we make that does, and builds depth from a second red pigment rather than from blue. That is why it reads as wine rather than as a red with brown in it.
Less than you might hope. Plant pigment adds and never lifts, so on dark brown or black hair Wine Red reads as depth and a red sheen in the light rather than a visible wine colour. It shows most clearly on light to medium brown hair, and most vividly of all on grey.
Not on day one. Henna arrives first and reads warmer than the finished shade, and the manjistha settles more slowly. Give it a day or two before judging. There is no green stage to wait out here — that is an indigo thing, and this shade has none.
Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Warmth helps the colour along, which is why a shower cap works so well — it holds warmth and moisture together. A hair dryer gives you the warmth and takes the moisture, and moisture is what carries the pigment onto the fibre.
Two things help. First, start on genuinely clean hair — no conditioner, no leave-in, no silicone. Residue blocks the pigment. Second, try the vinegar step: add 1 to 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to the mixed paste and let it rest 15 to 30 minutes before applying. Henna's pigment releases more readily in mildly acidic conditions. This works on this shade because there is no indigo in it.
It colours grey readily — grey has no melanin of its own to compete, so it takes plant pigment more easily than pigmented hair does. On darker hair with greys, the greys will take the red while the rest changes less, which reads as highlights rather than uniform coverage.
Typically about 30–45 days, depending on your hair type and washing routine. Because lawsone is bonded to the keratin rather than deposited inside the shaft, it wears down gradually rather than rinsing out — so it softens rather than growing out in a hard line. Strong or clarifying shampoos, frequent washing and very hot water all shorten it.
No. This is a non-oxidative plant colour with no peroxide or ammonia-type lightening agents, so it deposits colour rather than lifting your natural pigment. A lighter result requires starting with a lighter base.

The US Pouch
Ordered as Needed, Flown In, Shipped Fresh
Every pouch we sell is handled the same way, from the factory in India to your door, so that it reaches you as close to freshly made as we can manage — and so all 24 shades stay in stock.
Sealed at the factory
Dried, blended, vacuum-packed
The herbs are dried and blended at the factory and vacuum-sealed there, while the powder is fresh. Air is what ages plant powder — henna's pigment breaks down with oxygen, and air-exposed powder smells much stronger.
Flown in
By the pallet, by air
Each shade is ordered in units of 25, and the shades due for restocking are combined into a pallet of about 1,000 pouches, flown to Torrance, California — days in the air instead of months at sea.
Checked monthly
Each shade, on its own schedule
We check every shade's sales each month and forecast demand from our sales history, with the help of AI. When a shade drops below three to six months of stock, we order about a year to eighteen months' worth — enough to stay in stock, not so much that it sits.
18 months+
Left on every pouch we send
We ship the oldest stock first, and take any batch with less than 18 months left out of sale. Every order arrives with at least 18 months before its expiry date.
