Why does it come in two packs?

Beard hair is harder to colour than head hair, and getting a true Soft Black from plants alone meant separating them. Pack 1 is henna-based and lays down a warm base that bonds to the hair. Pack 2 is indigo-based and adds the depth.

Can I apply Pack 2 first, or mix both packs together?

No. Indigo keeps developing after it is rinsed off, while the hair is still damp — that is where the black comes from. Applied first, it would spend that time under a second layer of henna paste instead. Mixed together, you would get a different colour from the one the kit is designed for.

How long does the whole process take?

About two and a half hours on the day: one hour for each pack, plus washing, mixing and rinsing. After that, the colour keeps settling for two to three days.

My beard looks green or blue-grey after rinsing. Did something go wrong?

No. Indigo arrives as green and deepens over the following day or two. It shows most clearly on grey hairs, because there is no pigment underneath to hide it. Leave it alone and it clears on its own.

Can I blow-dry my beard afterwards?

Please don't — not with warm air and not with cool. Indigo only develops while the hair stays damp, and drying it fast stops the reaction where it is, leaving the beard warmer than Soft Black. We tested this on grey hair swatches, and re-wetting afterwards did not bring the colour back.

Will it cover all of my grey?

Beard hair is harder to colour than head hair, and results vary with the hair. If the first result is lighter than you want, a second round builds on the first — plant colour layers rather than clashing.

I have sensitive skin. Can I use it?

It contains no PPD, PTD, ammonia or peroxide — the ingredients most people with sensitive skin are trying to avoid in beard dye. It does contain henna and indigo, and some people react to plants too. Do a patch test on a small area of skin 48 hours before your first application, and if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor.

Will it stain my skin?

Henna can stain skin for a day or two. Wear the gloves provided and wipe the skin along the edges of your beard as you apply.

How long does the colour last?

It fades gradually rather than growing out in a line. Henna bonds to the hair and wears down as the hair does; indigo sits in the outer layers and fades sooner. Most men re-colour as the beard grows.

Can I use it on the hair on my head?

The kit is formulated and tested for beards. For head hair, we make five men's shades: Soft Black, Dark Brown, Brown, Light Brown and Darkest Ash Blonde.

Is it available in other colours?

Currently Soft Black only. It is the shade men ask for most, and each new beard shade takes a great deal of testing.

Men kept writing to ask us for a beard colour. Almost all of them gave the same reason: sensitive skin, and very little beard dye that isn't built on PPD. Beard colour goes on your face, not your scalp — so we made one from plants alone.

It took a long time. Beard hair is harder to colour than head hair, and getting a true Soft Black from herbs alone meant splitting them into two packs, applied one after the other. It takes longer than a one-step dye. That is the trade for having nothing synthetic in it.

Why two packs, and why in that order

Pack 1 is henna-based. It lays down a warm base that bonds to the hair.

Pack 2 is indigo-based, and indigo behaves differently: it keeps developing after you rinse it off, while the hair is still damp. That is where the black comes from. Put indigo on first and it spends that time underneath a second layer of henna paste instead — so it has to go second.

What we measured

We mixed both packs ourselves and took the numbers, so the instructions below are measurements rather than estimates.

Two useful things follow from that.

First, the ratio is the same for both packs — 5 oz (150 g) of water to a 1.76 oz (50 g) pack — so there is only one number to remember. Pack 2 comes out slightly firmer than Pack 1 at that ratio. That is normal: it still spreads without dripping, and it does not need extra water.

Second, the two pastes are chemically different, and each sits on the side its own pigment prefers. Henna releases its colour in mildly acidic conditions; indigo does not. Amla, the acid in the blend, is in Pack 1 with the henna — which is why Pack 1 measures well on the acid side while Pack 2 comes out close to neutral. Splitting the kit in two does more than separate the colours.

How to Use

Wash your beard with shampoo. No conditioner or beard oil — they stop the paste reaching the hair. Towel-blot until damp.
Mix Pack 1 with 5 oz (150 g) of warm tap water. That is three parts water to one part powder by weight, which is what we measured. Keep stirring for two to three minutes — it will look too dry at first, and that's normal. (※1)
Apply to beard and moustache with the brush, working it down to the roots. Wear the gloves. Henna can stain skin for a day or two, so wipe the edges as you go.
Leave it on for 1 hour. If the paste starts to dry and crack, mist it lightly with water — dried paste has stopped working.
Rinse with water only. Towel-blot.
Now mix Pack 2 the same way, with the same 5 oz (150 g) of water. It will come out a little firmer than Pack 1 — leave it there rather than thinning it down. Mix it only when you're ready to use it, since indigo is best applied soon after mixing.
Apply and leave for 1 hour, keeping it damp as before.
Rinse with water only, and let your beard dry on its own. No hair dryer, warm or cool. (※2)

Over the next two to three days, the colour settles to Soft Black. No shampoo during that time — water only. (※3)

※1. Water reaches the powder more slowly than it looks. What seems like a finished paste after a minute is still dry powder wrapped in wet powder — keep working it and it turns smooth and fluid on its own. If yours still feels too stiff after three minutes of stirring, add water a tablespoon at a time: thick enough not to drip, loose enough to coat each hair.

※2. This is the one step that can't be undone. Indigo only develops while the hair stays damp — dry it fast and the reaction stops where it is, leaving the beard warmer than Soft Black. We tested this, and re-wetting afterwards did not bring the colour back.

※3. Right after rinsing it may look green or blue-grey, especially on grey hairs. That is indigo mid-reaction, not a fault. It clears on its own.

Prep

Apply evenly down to the roots and leave for 1 hour, keeping the paste damp as before.
Rinse Pack 2
Rinse with water only. No shampoo for 48 to 72 hours.
Oxidation (Important)
Your beard may look green or blue-grey at first, especially on grey hairs — this is normal. The colour keeps developing toward Soft Black over two to three days.
After-care to Prevent a Warm or Purple Result
Let your beard dry on its own. No hair dryer, warm or cool — indigo only develops while the hair stays damp, and drying it fast stops the colour where it is, leaving the beard reddish or purplish. Re-wetting afterwards does not bring the colour back.

I Love Radico’s Shampoo Bar

I have fine hair and have been under the belief that my hair needs to be “squeaky clean” and then add a load of volumizing & super moisturizing conditioner to make it right. Radio’s shampoo bar doesn’t weigh it down or strip it -which feels odd at first, but that’s actually because my hair is not being stripped of its natural oils in the first place.

Product never arrived and though I've written, no answer and no explanation. I ordered 8 packets so that is a lot of money.

According to USPS tracking, your original order of 8 Brown packets was delivered on February 9 (Delivered to Front Door/Porch). However, after you informed us that the package had not arrived, we immediately arranged a replacement shipment of the same items.
For the second shipment, we used UPS for added security, and we received confirmation from UPS that the package was successfully delivered to you on February 24.

Wheat Blonde

My natural hair color is dark blonde with some grays. I mixed the color according the instructions. First time I decided to keep the mixture on my hair for 60 minutes under plastic foil and warm towel. There was no change to my hair color, the greys were not covered. I didn’t wash my hair for 3 days to see, if there will be any difference with my hair color. Nothing. On the fourth day after first coloring, I repeated the whole process. This time I waited 80 minutes before rinsing my hair. Again, I waited 3 day before washing my hair to see, if there will be the oxidation process, as I saw on one video. Nothing happened. My hair is not colored at all. Waste of money and my time. I won’t be buying this product in the future.

Hair Regrowth

I am believing that a small bald spot in the back near the top will be filled in by your product. I have long hair and for over a year my hair was matted and tangled big time and much of it broke off trying to untangle it and it left that bald spot, which I don't like. I was coming my hair and all of a sudden it got tangled up and I tried to untangle it and the more I did the more it got tangled. One of these freaky fluky things that never should have happened and it is the only reason my hair is thinner now after having a full head of hair as a male even at 72 years old.

Sorry to say I have been using chemical hair dyes on my hair for many years, until I discovered your hair dye. And I absolutely love it! It last longer than any hair dye I have ever used on my hair. Organic/Did not turn out well

I love that this product is non toxic, but it is a long process! My hair is naturally medium blonde with a little gray. It came out red, which is not what I wanted. Also, it says do not wash your hair for 3 days after dyeing it. That was tough because my hair felt like straw after. I wished that using this product was a bit simpler and it had achieved the results that I had hoped for. I still love that this company is trying to make something safe, it just did not work for me!

The product is easy to mix, and the smell was expected. The mix was left on my hair for over an hour with blowdeying every 20-30 minutes. After wash, the hair darkended with no sign of copper. Very disappointed

Way easier than I expected!

I developed an allergy to chemical dyes, so I thought I’d give this a try! I was nervous about using henna because I had heard mixed results regarding color and coverage- but I was pleasantly surprised!!! It was as easy to use as any other hair dye and covered my greys well! It did look a bit green at my roots when I first washed it out, but over two days it darkened (which was kindof fun to watch!) I’ll definitely be using this again!

The Real Deal

This product lives up to expectations. Though the color I chose was too dark, Radico’s customer service was excellent. They sent me replacement bags in a lighter shade and I appreciated their care, responsiveness, and hassle free approach. As for the product, the coverage was great and over the first couple of weeks, the color faded a tad which worked for me. My hair smelt like herbal grass for a few washings. That was probably the most negative thing but it was also tolerable given the benefits of this all natural product. As my roots are growing out, the fascinating thing is unlike chemical permanent color, the roots are not as starkly noticeable with my Radico colored hair seem - it seems to blend a bit. I really like this chemical free alternative.

So Far So Good!

I've had years of experience with "henna", but not with other plant based dyes. I had virgin hair for the past couple of years after deciding not to have bright red hair anymore and am 50/50 salt and pepper. I am just not ready to go completely au natural after all and am not wanting to go back to red... So, I sought out my options and different companies that were plant based and 100% natural as I am allergic to traditional chemical hair dyes no matter how "friendly" they say they are (I have MCAS).

I found Radico and decided on the "wheat blonde" color with realistic expectations that having low porosity hair and being that my hair is salt and pepper.... it just may not work or at least not take the color that well right off the bat which is exactly what happened.

I wish this company had more knowledge and understanding about the plant dyes that they use in their products and especially the instructions. I've read many reviews of unhappy customers that did not have a good outcome with an expected change of color. First off, plants dyes are a whole other ball game...

Any lighter colored dyes (without henna not colorless henna, but HENNA) NEED to develop OVERNIGHT before use. So, about 9-12 hours. Also, you need something acidic to activate said dye... Mix up the dye as per the instructions to an almost honey or yogurt like consistency and then add 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the mix and stir well so that it is to a honey like consistency. Also, they say not to use boiling hot water. Please use boiling hot water since you will not be applying the dye right away. Then cover with plastic wrap! Let it set over night at room temperature on the counter for use the next morning. Then apply to your hair per instructions and cover it with the plastic cap and even Saran wrap on top of the plastic cap. Use heat periodically (this is also VERY important or use a microwavable heat cap that you can use purchased off of Amazon).

If you have low porosity hair like I do.. leave on for 7-8 hours your first time or even second time around (plan to stay home that day!). It may take up to three times to achieve the color you'd like. The first time around the color was very subtle. The second time around it was definitely more prominent! And, I will be doing it a 3rd time to achieve the color I want.

This all might sound like a major pain and too much work, but really.. it's not and it is totally worth it! You cannot replace your HEALTH! :)

We’re very sorry that your Copper Brown turned green when you were expecting a natural brown shade. We completely understand how alarming that must have been, especially if you were not expecting this color change.
The green color immediately after rinsing can be a normal stage for a shade containing indigo. Indigo naturally begins with a green tone and gradually develops toward blue as it oxidizes. As that color develops together with the warmer henna pigments in Copper Brown, the final shade gradually moves toward brown over the following 2–3 days.
During this period, we recommend air-drying rather than using a hair dryer and avoiding strong shampoo for approximately 48–72 hours. Maintaining some natural moisture in the hair can also help the indigo develop properly.
If your hair is still green after 2–3 days, or if you simply do not want to go through the process again, please contact us at customer-service@radicousa.com. Since this was your first experience with our hair color, we can either send you another shade at no charge or provide a full refund.
We also appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Although we explain the green stage in our instructions and website, your experience tells us that we need to make this information much more noticeable before customers begin coloring. I was a little disappointed, I purchased wheat

I was a little disappointed, I purchased wheat blonde and followed the instructions and did not get the results I was looking for , it did not cover my gray but it did make my hair softer , I have less than 30% gray hair mostly on my hair line and I having light brownish blonde hair with a little gray , what color would you recommend, that was my first time.

Does not dye grey hair whether I leave dye on for 1 hour or 3 1/2 hours

I have very short hair, much shorter on the sides than the top as I have a mohawk and I let the hair on the sides grow in a bit between haircuts. I have only used the dark brown color and I have dyed my hair 4 times. While the color is pleasing to me, the dye will do nothing to color my grey hair. The first time I used it I left the dye paste on my hair for 1 hour. The last time - today-I left it on my hair for 3 hours and twenty minutes and it still didn't even touch my grey hairs which are all near my hairline. Each of the four times I used the product, I blow dried around the edges of my hairline for 1-2 minutes as instructed every 15 - 20 minutes and still nothing. I loaded up the paste along the edges every time. During the second and third hair dye experiences, I even sat under a steamer cap hoping the hot steam would keep the paste moist. There was no difference in my grey hair. I love how principled the company is and love their comprehensive website with all the instructions and how to tell if hair is porous , and how incredible clean and healthy and humanely sourced their products are. I wish I could continue patronizing their company but if the product doesn't work for me and doesn't do what they say it will do, I'll have to move on. Very disappointing!

Great coverage and pleasant scent.

Tried other henna brands but none of them worked. When I discovered Radico I was not sure how the color will come out. First I tried Champagne Blonde which covered my grey hair well but the all over color was a little too light. Next I tried Beige blonde and it came out just the way I wanted to. The greys are light blonde and the rest of my hair darker beige and golden. The color smella very pleasant ( my cats are very attracted to it ). I am very happy to have discovered Radico colors since they are natural and none irritating.

This hair color DOES NOT WORK!!!!

This hair color does not break me out but is terrible and doesn’t color my hair at ALL! I wouldn’t recommend this product to anyone or ever buy it again. I’ve tried it 3 times and haven’t had good results in turning my grey black!!!

I like that this product is all natural, but the color is not brown enough. I left my color on for an hour and 20 minutes and followed directions with the boiling water and using the hair dryer a couple times during application. I also reapplied a couple days after first application. My color faded quickly even though I have rinsed and not washed my hair.

Color that lasts

It's a nice product, when applying I noticed it doesn't have any harsh chemical smell. Be prepared to commit two hours for the process. After the first application your hair will turn orange but during the second you will achieve your desired shade. Trust the process.
They did recommend wrapping the beard in plastic but I didn't have any at home. It would have been nice if it was included with the packet. Something form fitting that contours to the jaw line.
Overall I would give it 4.5 out of 5.

did not receive the gloves with the package

Do your research and NO IT DOESN'T FADE

As much as they may have tried to help, customer service that answered my questions were wrong about this key piece of information - this DOES NOT FADE as I was told several times. I never would have tried had I known. The colors no matter what I have done after the initial color has come out red. And when I checked back I was told they could not help me anymore and I was referred to the director but I never heard back (as of yet). It is a bummer because I was growing out my gray and now I have to start again BUT I also have hair that looks terrible.

Different browns

I do love the products but I am struggling with the colors I purchase and they all turn my hair to a reddish color. My natural color is brown although the grey has taken over. I started with light brown and it turned out almost all red. I contacted Radico and they suggested go to brown which I did. I had mostly brown hair but then it turned to a lot of red. I contacted Radico again and they suggested dark brown. I loved the color and had a little red but after a few weeks I had a lot of red again. I don't like the red streaks in it. Any suggestions as how to achieve just brown hair. I am okay if it turns out a lighter brown or dark brown, I just want brown with no red in it. I love how natural your products are I have also used the conditioners and bar soap, I just need help in obtaining a color without any red in it.
