Organic Methi Seed Powder is milled Trigonella foenum-graecum seed, grown and processed on our own certified organic farms. One ingredient in the pouch and nothing else.

Stir it into warm water and within a minute the mixture goes slippery. Unmistakably, in a way none of the other single herbs we make do. That is the whole of what methi does — and everything it is used for in hair care follows from it.

 

🌱 What is actually doing the work

The slip is galactomannan: a soluble polysaccharide the seed is unusually rich in. It is a chain of mannose sugars with galactose branches, and its density of hydroxyl groups is what binds water. It belongs to the same class of molecule as guar gum and locust bean gum, both of which you have almost certainly eaten.

Three things follow from that, and they are physical rather than biological:

  • The paste has slip. It spreads under the fingers and moves between sections instead of dragging.
  • It holds water. A methi paste stays damp longer than a leaf paste of the same thickness.
  • It leaves a film. Galactomannans are used across food and cosmetic science as thickeners, emulsifiers and film-formers.

You can verify all of this in a bowl before it ever reaches your hair.

 

💧 It drinks more water than anything else we make

One part powder to five parts water, by weight. That is nearly twice what the rest of the range needs, and it is not a rounding difference — at the one-to-three ratio that turns a leaf powder into a workable paste, methi comes out like peanut butter and is genuinely difficult to spread.

Mix at 1:5, wait five minutes, and judge the consistency then — not immediately. The polysaccharide needs a moment to hydrate fully, and a mixture that looked right at once will have set firmer by the time you come to apply it. If it does go too stiff, add water a spoonful at a time; it takes it readily.

 

🔬 What we measured

We measured the pH of the paste at the consistency we recommend. The reading was 5.61.

Hair's own surface sits at roughly pH 4.5 to 5.5, so methi lands just above the top of that range — essentially where hair already is. It is not acidic enough to flatten the cuticle the way shikakai is, and it is nowhere near alkaline.

That number rules something out rather than supporting it: whatever you feel after using methi, the pH is not the explanation. Which leaves the polysaccharide.

Our own reading, on a handheld meter calibrated against pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers. Water hardness will move it.

 

🎨 Methi and colour

Methi contains no lawsone and no indigotin. It is sometimes described as a dye plant; it isn't. It will not colour hair and will not shift a herbal colour you already have.

That is exactly why it can sit inside a colour recipe: methi is one of the herbs in 11 of our 24 Colour Me Organic shades — not for colour, but because a mix with methi in it spreads more easily and stays damp longer, and staying damp is what a plant colour needs.

Those eleven are the browns, the reds and the warm blondes. Methi appears in none of the ash shades.

One caveat: on white or very pale blonde hair, a long application may leave a faint warm cast. If your hair is in that range, strand test first.

 

⚖️ What we do not claim

Search fenugreek and hair together and you will find DHT, 5-alpha-reductase, and comparisons with hair loss treatments. We have read that material, and it is not on this page. Three reasons:

  • The hormone connection is a factory process, not a biological one. Diosgenin, the seed's marker compound, is genuinely the industrial starting material for the commercial synthesis of steroids. That conversion happens in a chemical plant, through multiple steps with reagents a body does not have. The human body does not perform it, and neither does a scalp.
  • The 5-AR work is computational and preclinical — docking simulations and animal studies using concentrated extracts, not milled seed in a water paste on a human scalp.
  • In the United States, that claim would make this a drug. We sell a cosmetic.
