Mahogany - Organic Hair Color
Mahogany
Colour Me Organic Premium
Certified Organic Hair Color 3.5oz
A warm reddish-brown from six organic herbs — and one of three shades we make where henna comes first on the ingredient list.
Day one will look wrong. After a green cast at the rinse, this shade goes warm and orange for a day before the brown depth arrives. It settles into mahogany over days two and three. Don't judge it on the first evening.

Embrace the Warm Elegance of Natural Mahogany
Mahogany is a deep, reddish-brown shade inspired by the richness of polished wood. This versatile color blends warm red and brown tones to create a vibrant yet refined finish.

Unlike cooler red-violet shades, Mahogany offers a warmer red-orange reflection that appears brighter and more dimensional. It enhances your natural beauty without being overly dramatic, making it ideal for those who want a noticeable yet sophisticated transformation.

This timeless hue adds depth and warmth to your hair, complementing both cool and warm skin tones throughout every season.
How Is Mahogany Different from Burgundy?
Though both shades feature red undertones, they differ subtly in tone and intensity:
-
Mahogany: A warmer red-brown shade with a red-orange reflection. It appears brighter and more brown-toned.
-
Burgundy: A deeper red-violet shade with cooler undertones and greater intensity.
Mahogany is perfect for those seeking warmth and vibrancy, while Burgundy offers cooler depth and drama.

-

Mahogany or Auburn Red?
These two share the same six herbs in the same order on the label — henna first, indigo second, amla third. The difference is in the proportions, which we don't publish — held by one person at our production facility in India.
Mahogany carries more brown depth; Auburn Red runs more copper. If you want the redder of the two, Auburn Red →

What kind of colour this is
Conventional dye lifts your own pigment out and puts synthetic pigment in its place — and a reddish-brown needs lifting first if your hair is darker than the target. This one doesn't lift anything. Lawsone bonds to keratin in the outer layers, so the cuticle stays shut and there is no damage to repair afterwards.
The trade is straightforward: it costs you the option of going lighter, and saves you everything that comes with it.
- Powder-based organic colour for men and women
- Certified organic by ECOCERT
- No peroxide, ammonia, PPD, parabens or synthetic pigment
- Contains indigo — there is a green cast at the first rinse, and it clears within a day
- Colours grey most vividly of all; on darker hair it reads as depth rather than a colour change
- At-home application, no developer to mix
- Not suitable for anyone with a known indigo or plant-dye allergy — patch test first
What to expect over three days
- Right after rinsing — a green cast over the warmth. That's the indigo before it has met the air. Temporary.
- First 12 to 24 hours — the green clears and the henna comes forward, reading warmer and more orange than the finish.
- Days two and three — settles into mahogany as the indigo finishes. Judge your colour here.
Do not blow-dry. Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Dry the paste and nothing transfers; dry the hair afterwards and the colour stalls partway. Shower cap while it processes, air-dry after.

Ingredients
Six certified organic herbs, and no base powder or carrier underneath them. Ingredient lists run in order of quantity, and this is one of three shades we make where henna comes first — indigo second, and the acid that steadies them third. There is no manjistha here: nothing is building the red alongside henna, only shaping what it gives. And one thing the order cannot tell you: Auburn Red carries these same six herbs in this same order. The two sit in different collections — this one in Black & Brown, that one in Red — but the labels are identical. Everything separating them is in the proportions, which we don't publish. If you are choosing between them, compare the photographs rather than the ingredient lists.
Important: this shade contains indigo, which a small number of people react to. Patch test before use, especially if you have sensitive skin or have reacted to plant dyes before. Stop use if irritation occurs. 100% organic. Made in India.
FAQ
Yes. Indigo is second on the ingredient list for this shade — it is what takes henna's red toward brown without covering it. If you have a known indigo or plant-dye sensitivity, don't use it. If you're unsure, patch test and wait 48 hours.
Less than you might hope. Plant pigment adds and never lifts, so on dark brown or black hair Mahogany reads as depth and a red sheen in the light rather than a visible colour change. It shows most clearly on light to medium brown hair, and most vividly of all on grey.
Not on day one. After a green cast at the rinse, the henna comes forward first and reads much warmer than the finished shade. The indigo arrives more slowly, settling it into mahogany over days two and three. What isn't right is a flat orange still sitting there on day four — that usually means the development stopped early, almost always from force-drying the hair.
That is the indigo before it has met the air. It sits over the warmth for a day and clears on its own. The red underneath is already forming.
Not while the paste is on, and not for the first 24 hours after rinsing. Warmth helps the colour along, which is why a shower cap works so well — it holds warmth and moisture together. A hair dryer gives you the warmth and takes the moisture, and moisture is what carries the pigment onto the fibre and lets the reaction finish. Force-drying leaves the colour stalled partway.
Same six herbs in the same order on the label — henna first, indigo second, amla third. The difference is in the proportions, which we don't publish. Mahogany carries more brown depth; Auburn Red runs more copper. If you want the redder of the two, Auburn Red is the one to look at.
It colours grey readily — grey has no melanin of its own to compete, so it takes plant pigment more easily than pigmented hair does. On darker hair with greys, the greys will take the colour while the rest changes less, which reads as highlights rather than uniform coverage.
Typically about 30–45 days, depending on your hair type and washing routine. Because lawsone is bonded to the keratin rather than deposited inside the shaft, it wears down gradually rather than rinsing out — so it softens rather than growing out in a hard line. Strong or clarifying shampoos, frequent washing and very hot water all shorten it.
No. This is a non-oxidative plant colour with no peroxide or ammonia-type lightening agents, so it deposits colour rather than lifting your natural pigment. A lighter result requires starting with a lighter base.
Tell us. Day one looks alarming enough that people sometimes give up before the colour lands, so give it three days first. First-time customers who don't get the result they expected can have a different shade sent free, or a full refund on the colour.
It's made from certified organic herbs with no synthetic additives, but any colour product can irritate some people, and indigo in particular causes reactions in a small number. Patch test before full application, especially with sensitive skin or a history of reactions to plant dyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

The US Pouch
Ordered as Needed, Flown In, Shipped Fresh
Every pouch we sell is handled the same way, from the factory in India to your door, so that it reaches you as close to freshly made as we can manage — and so all 24 shades stay in stock.
Sealed at the factory
Dried, blended, vacuum-packed
The herbs are dried and blended at the factory and vacuum-sealed there, while the powder is fresh. Air is what ages plant powder — henna's pigment breaks down with oxygen, and air-exposed powder smells much stronger.
Flown in
By the pallet, by air
Each shade is ordered in units of 25, and the shades due for restocking are combined into a pallet of about 1,000 pouches, flown to Torrance, California — days in the air instead of months at sea.
Checked monthly
Each shade, on its own schedule
We check every shade's sales each month and forecast demand from our sales history, with the help of AI. When a shade drops below three to six months of stock, we order about a year to eighteen months' worth — enough to stay in stock, not so much that it sits.
18 months+
Left on every pouch we send
We ship the oldest stock first, and take any batch with less than 18 months left out of sale. Every order arrives with at least 18 months before its expiry date.
Applies to orders shipped by Radico USA. More on storage and dates →
