We frequently receive questions about dyeing hair with a hair paste made by dissolving 100% natural hair color powder in pure vegetable oils, such as olive oil or coconut oil, instead of water. This method is particularly popular among those who experience dryness when dyeing their hair with henna. Therefore, we tested the effects of adding oil to our natural hair color paste to address these concerns.
To begin, we compared the results of dyeing hair with our darkest product, 100% Organic Hair Color - Soft Black, using three different methods:
Hair paste mixed with water only (the standard method).
Hair paste mixed with water and approximately 30% olive oil.
Hair paste mixed with olive oil only.
・Olive Oil Only: When using olive oil alone, the color did not take at all.
・Water with 30% Olive Oil: The hair paste was mixed with water and about 30% olive oil. The gray hair sample was dyed effectively, though the color was slightly lighter than the standard method.
・Standard Method (Water Only): This is the usual method of using the hair paste, resulting in consistent and thorough dyeing.
This is because our vegetable pigments are primarily water-soluble and formulated to dye thoroughly in water.
Our conclusion is that while you can add some oil to the hair paste, it's best to limit it to about 30%. This ensures effective dyeing without compromising the color, especially for lighter shades.
