Radico Organic Manjistha Root Powder is milled root of Rubia cordifolia, also called Indian madder, certified organic. One ingredient in the pouch and nothing else — no fillers, no synthetic preservatives, no fragrance, no PPD, no ammonia. Net weight 100 g (3.5 oz).
Where the colour comes from
Manjistha is a madder, and like other madders its root holds red anthraquinone pigments. Indian madder is not the same plant as European madder (Rubia tinctorum). The main dye of European madder is alizarin; in Indian madder, alizarin is present only in small amounts, and the main colourants are munjistin, pseudopurpurin and purpurin. On textiles the two give similar red hues.
Textile dyers fix madder with a mordant, usually alum. Hair colour uses no mordant, so we do not claim textile-level wash fastness for manjistha on hair.
What it does on hair
We have not yet published a test of manjistha used on its own. In our hair colours it always works alongside henna or indigo, and that is the use we can describe with confidence.

In Wine Red it is what gives depth without indigo: a second red pigment rather than blue laid over the top. That is why Wine Red has no green stage and no purple risk.
How to use it
Mix the powder with warm water into a smooth paste. Strand test first, on a small section of hair, before using it more widely.

Before you use it
Patch test on the inner forearm 48 hours before a full application. If it itches or reddens, wash it off and do not use it.
